Gender in Schools

Implementing the concept of Gender into Education

Can schools help promote the notion of equal opportunities of women and men? Yes, they can.

How? By making lessons enhancing pupils' and students' sensitivity to inequality between men and women in society.

What can help change teaching methods? Giving teachers inspiration as to how to innovate the lessons of civics by leaving more room to gender issues. Designing and offering to teachers a handbook of teaching methods that deals with ordinary subjects and topics from the gender perspective.

Our project called Implementing the concept of Gender into Education, shortened Gender in Schools, aims to create the conditions and tools that would help enhance the sensitivity of Czech society to gender issues. The change in perception of the equality between men and women can be efficiently promoted through the education of the youngest generation. Education is provided in a specific environment, currently not much encouraging promotion of the concept of equality between men and women and in enhancing sensitivity to gender issues. Therefore, the project aims to change the environment while building a more solid base in education.

Educational system is a complex institution consisting of many layers; thus the project is made up of three separate parts. Each part covers a separate component of the educational system:

Part 1 - A handbook for the teachers of civics and social sciences. The book aims to encourage teachers to include gender issues into the curriculum of subjects dealing with social issues.

Part 2 - Teaching materials for students of Pedagogy. The aim is to include gender issues into the training of future teachers.

Part 3 -Promoting changes in institutional and legal framework. This part of the project aims to include gender issues into teaching documents and to promote efficiently gender mainstreaming at the Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic.

All three modules are conducted step by step, and the tools and output of each of them support and complement one another.

The project enjoys strong support by experts on gender studies, teachers working at primary and secondary schools, and the Ministry of Education. Cooperation with the gender focal point at the Ministry of Education is of immense importance, she is arranged for the project the inevitable support of the public educational institutions.
